The state of Qi was part of the Zhou Kingdom founded after the overthrow of Shang in the 11th century B.C. The first marquis was Jiang Ziya and his family ruled Qi for several centuries before the Tian family gained control in 386 B.C.

Throughout the Spring and Autumn period the state of Qi centralized its government and grew in strength annexing 35 neighboring states as well as bringing several others into submission. Qi's dominance continued into the early part of the Warring States period annexing more states into its territory. By 532 B.C. the internal political maneuvering came to a head when the Tian clan destroyed several rival families dominating the state. Over the next 100+ years the Tian clan assassinated rival leaders and fought with other clans until 386 B.C. when they fully replaced the House of Jiang as the rules of Qi. Wars raged across the lands and the state of Qin continued to defeat the states surrounding Qi but finally in 221 B.C. they were the last state to be conquered unifying all of China.
