The State of Han grew slowly and steadily during the early periods of Chinese history but its biggest strength was also its greatest weakness. The smallest of the seven Warring States, Han maintained control over the North China Plain which was the most common and easiest passageway for travelers between east and west. This made Han a target of several military operations from Qin and lead to its eventual downfall in 230 B.C. Han was the first of the seven major states to be conquered by Qin.
The Han military may have been small but it was expertly lead and contained well armed and experienced soldiers. Han was surrounded by its enemies forcing the army to adapt quickly and use its experiences to improve their strategy. Overall, the morale of the army was relatively low and they were reluctant to fight but their constant state of war left them no choice but to defend their homeland. Han was a rich state and equipped their soldiers with the best arms and armor but their need for mobility to defend their borders required more lightly armored soldiers than the cumbersome heavy troopers. Every soldier could fight just as well with a bow or crossbow as they could with a spear, dagger-axe, or sword making them very versatile in the field. The State's primary color was red and used heavily in their banner and uniform designs. The armor, weather it was padded, leather, or metal plates would have been blackened or brownish in color. The trim of the clothing, cuffs, and collars were often a light or sky blue but could also be represented in other colors. |
